My magazine proposal
Objective with an overview of the magazine
My magazine idea is to create a genre based magazine that celebrates the Indie genre, style and its artists. My magazine will be print based and digitally available to customers, since my magazine is and Indie magazine I want to create an edgy but relaxed looking magazine, I will do this by using quite plain photos (one or two people) with plain(ish) backgrounds to get across this relaxed but cool theme whilst making the artist the main focal point for the audience. I want to target the newer music scene, which I can achieve by targeting a younger teenage audience. Since my target audience is younger, I want to make it more affordable for them, whilst still being of good quality.
My magazine will have information on indie clothing style and clothing stores, information on things like record fairs and also talk about any competition happening it is going to advertise a few indie shops like stores and vinyl stores and sales (as long as it is relevant to the magazine and its purpose) .I also like the idea of having a scannable section which opened up a playlist for the customer with popular songs by the artists being featured (USP). The purpose of my magazine is to promote upcoming indie artists and raise their profiles so that they become known by the public, since there are many artists out there many talented ones don't get heard, so this magazine will help them to get noticed and give them a better chance of doing well in the music industry.
We want educate our audience on the Indie genre so that any new indie fans gain a better understanding on the genre and become more informed, as we feel it is important that they know more about what else is part of the genre.
We also aim to entertain our audience with the content, images and opportunities that are available to them.
Form
The form of my magazine will be a print and digital magazine, this magazine will have a new issue every two weeks. As my magazine is online (as well as print) we want to make subscriptions available to our customers so we are going to offer our customers subscription deals, so the longer the subscription they buy is the better a deal the will get either 1 issue for £2.50, 3 issues (2.5 month subscription) for £7.30, 6 issues (5 month subscription) for £14, 12 issues (10 month subscription) for £27. These subscription deals are cheaper than just buying 12 of our magazines separately, which will benefit our customers as they get a better deal on our magazines whilst also benefiting the business as it means customers are more likely buy multiple magazines then one individual one (as they can get a better deal on it) which will make more money for the magazine. When we know how well these subscription deals are doing we will make possibly come out with yearly subscription deals and more.
For our online subscription you will need to download our app first, which will provide our audience with a few extra services/deals for example a albums which they can download for free (with consent from the artists) which will have music from artists we are promoting. Our magazine subscription will be a bit cheaper than our print magazine and will cost £2 per issue, £4 for a monthly subscription (2 issues), £12 for a 5 month subscription (6 issues) and £23.40 for a 10 month subscription (12 issues).

Genre
The genre I chose to make this magazine on is Indie as it is recently becoming a more popular genre with the youth, which is who I am targeting so I felt that it would be quite fitting. The Indie genre originated from London.
The term Indie means ''(of a pop group, record label, or film company) not belonging or affiliated to a major record or film company.'' (definition taken from the dictionary) as it came from low budget independent labels who have broken free from corporate labels, leaving them free to explore many different sounds the positives from this is that I can write about the many different die sub genres as well for example: Alternative Indie, Funk metal, Emo, Indie/Rock, Post-Rock, Post-Grunge, Alternative-Rock. Although many of these did branch off a lot i am going to focus mostly on Indie and what its really known for (but i can still mention some of these sub genres). The genres focuses more on creating their music independently, without major influence from others and is more about what kind of sound and music the band wants to take instead of the consumer.
Another reason I'm choosing this genre is because it did originate from London and in our brief it wants us to make a magazine on the "vibrant music developing locally" so I found it would be quite fitting, furthermore this means London is known for Indie so it wouldn't be too hard to find artists to write about in my magazine and to also learn more about the genre.
Content
The content of my Indie magazine will contain on the cover is a main photo of an artist being featured in that edition. This edition will have a mid-shot of the artist with their name/band name along the lower third as I am promoting that artist so doing this will help get their name out there. My front cover will have 5 article titles on the right and left of the magazine going down the size mostly related to the indie genre artists, competitions and relate to the articles on the double page spread, on the bottom of the magazine there will a link to the website where customers can buy online subscriptions, there will also be our username for the magazines social media accounts so our customers can follow us which is important as our target customers are tech natives meaning that they grew up with technology so they will be very likely to have some form of social media making it more likely for them to follow our social media. the bar-code will be at the bottom left corner of the front cover.
The content of double page spread will contain a large image of two music artist which will be in the centre and to the left of the double page spread and will be a mid-shot. To the left of the double page spread will be three articles which will be about a new album from the artist being featured, the competition where customers have a chance to win studio time and information on the artist being featured. The last two articles will be on the bottom right of the double page spread and will be about information about the indie genre (like where it originated from to inform audiences) and indie style (clothing). a USP of my magazine is that in the bottom left of my magazine there will be a Spotify QR like scannable code which will open a playlist with popular music by the artists being featured that week which will change with every edition, I believe that this is a good idea is will help to promote these Indie artists and also gives my target customer good music to listen too, which is giving them their money's worth and will also help them to explore the indie genre better. my magazines colour scheme will be mostly muted colours blue, pink, yellow, orange and black as Indie is a colourful genre so I wanted to show this through the colour scheme as it will represent the genre through these colours as it shows Indie is very colourful and creative as a genre but I didn't want the magazine to be too colourful so that the bright colours will draw the audience's attention to those points, instead of the entire thing.
Target audience
My Primary Target Audience
My primary target audience is 15-19 year old Caucasian, British, females who are of a middle class. I have chosen to target females as more women listen to Indie in comparison to males and these women are usually in their teens which is why i have chosen to target 15-19 yr old's. I have chosen to target Caucasian British females as indie originated in
London furthermore we are selling and distributing our magazines in north London so it would be necessary to target an audience in Britain (North London).
My primary audience are females, it has been found that young females who listen to Indie music have some type of involvement in the creatives are, so our magazine will need to be artistically appealing to that target audience, for example the photos and layout should be of good quality and competition to get a chance to meet and make music with an artist will appeal to my audience (music creative arts). My target audience is expressive in their appearance as they are creative individuals, so talking about indie clothing styles and shops will further appeal to them and make it more likely to buy our magazine. My target audience are likely to be students, who own a Samsung or iPhone (to listen to music on) they also enjoy going to indie gigs and go to indie shops to buy clothes, they're also quite likely to play an instrument (guitar, bass, drums or singing) and use social media platforms like twitter and tumbler.
My Secondary Target Audience
My secondary target audience is 19-25 year old Caucasian and mixed race males and females who live in London. I have chosen this age as kids younger than 15 don't listen to Indie unlike 19-25 year old's as this genre hasn't only been becoming popular with a teenage audience, but also an older audience like university students as Indie can be quite relaxing and used to do their work. My secondary target audience will also own a mobile device and attend indie concerts and drink, they are also quite likely to be quite visually expressive and creative individuals.

Distribution
My magazine will be available online on our website where our customers will have the choice to buy a subscription or just a single magazine. Our online magazines will have some extra services, for example free album downloads and subscription prices are cheaper. According to current trends, sales of physical, paper copies of magazines are declining, with fewer people choosing to read them. Mostly, young people these days like to read content online, either through the magazine website itself or via apps. Therefore, having a strong digital distribution method is important for sales.
However, print magazines are still important, and the brief specifically states that we should have a print magazine. Therefore, we will need to have a strong distribution method for paper copies. Our print magazine will be distributed around schools and campuses, as most of our target audience are aged 15-19 meaning that they are still studying so it will easier to reach them and for them to see and know of the magazine as the magazines will be easily available to our target audience as they will see it almost daily at/near school. Though schools themselves wouldn't agree to distribute our magazine, we could ensure that we sell it in convenience stores close to schools. Selling magazines in campuses is usually acceptable. Many universities have student markets, so it may be the case that we will be able to pay for stalls in these markets and sell our magazine that way. This will be a good way to attract audiences. Many people might see it as an impulse buy, and if they like the content, they may become more regular readers of the magazine.
The magazines will also be sold around music and art stores as our target audience are creative individuals so it will reach them, furthermore our magazines will also be sold near indie clothing stores and vinyl stores as again our target audience goes to these locations also at Indie concerts our magazines will be available.
Marketing plan
My marketing plan is to market on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram,YouTube and also Spotify as our target audience will be quite active on these platforms as they have grown up with phones and social media so they are very likely to have 3 of these platforms or more and since many people have a social media platform a lot of people will see these ads. I think it is important to advertise on Spotify as this is where mainly everyone listens to music and Spotify has paid ads for non-premium Spotify users, meaning that we will reach our audience as people who listen to Indie music will get ads for our magazine. Furthermore we will advertise in school by putting up posters around the schools marketing our magazine, so our target market of 15-19 yr old's will see as they attend those schools.
Another good marketing plan is to have billboards to advertise our magazine as this will reach a wider audience and will be viewed by many more people as many people will walk and drive past this billboard. This is a good method of mass media above the line advertising, though it is expensive so might be something we can develop after the magazine has taken off. Less expensive would be to have posters printed for the magazine, and have these in and around university campuses as a way of promoting our product. As well as being cheaper, this would be a more targeted method of advertising, as we would be placing the posters in the areas where our target audiences are based.
When marketing on social media like twitter and Instagram we will get the artists that we are featuring to promote us on these social media platforms and we will also make our own social media accounts where we will promote our new magazine issues. on each of these accounts we will have a hyperlinks to our magazines website this will enable users to view teasers for content. there will also be an area for the site where you will be abel to take out subscription to the magazine.
With platforms like youtube, when the magazine takes off a bit then we'll have paid advertisements on youtube on videos related to our magazine product, on the youtube video we will have links to our social media accounts and to the website both in the video itself as title cards and also a link in the description.
Sample material
Title of magazine with font
The title of my music magazine is Reverb I have decide to choose this name as it is music terminology and will be quite fitting as it will be the name of a music magazine. Reverb is an effect whereby the sound produced by an amplifier or an amplified musical instrument is made to reverberate slightly, it is the natural reflection of sounds from surfaces sort of giving the impression of space and just gives a better sound overall (depending on the type of sound musicians want to create). The name Reverb' gives a modern feel to the magazine which will fit the whole idea of upcoming music and artist.Font styles
Masthead
I will be using the 'Emilio 20' font from Dafont.com as the font for my Masthead, which is the title of my magazine and will say Reverb which is the title of our magazine. I have chosen to use this font as it is very bold, thick and wide and I believe would be a good font to use or the mast head as it is eye catching due to how big it is so it will catch my audiences' eye and draw it to the masthead.Body copy
Article ideas
The first article idea I have chosen for the double page spread is "new album" which will talk about a new album an artist/band we are promoting has released also that it is available on vinyl (so it will also include vinyl store recommendations to buy it) and will talk about the album name and some of the song names and what inspired them as it is important to talk about new music released in the indie genre so that our customer can listen to it and if they like it they can listen to more, which will help these new artist sell albums and gain a bigger fan base.
Another article idea is "competition" where our customers have the chance of winning free studio time with the artists being featured so that they can write and record music, they can enter the competition by going onto our website and telling us why they think they deserve to win because this means customers will know about our website and online subscriptions making it more likely for people to buy.
Another article idea is 'Upcoming artists' which will talk about the artist we are promoting and a short interview we did with them so it will include quotes and questions like why did they start writing music and what inspires them etc.
Furthermore an article idea also being used it 'Indie genre' which will talk about the genre and where it originated from etc. so that we can educate our customers about the genre so that they can learn more from it.
Finally the last article will be in 'indie style' so it will recommend indie stores to shop at and popular indie clothes and styles, so that customers who like to express themselves through their clothing and want to know how to look and dress more indie will know how and this will appeal to them as there are clothing store recommendations.
Hand drawn sketches and layouts
Moodboard
I have chosen to do my mood board like this as the photos use gives a relaxed feeling to the genre, the colours used are also not too bright and the images used are quite plain so that the audience focuses on the main image which is the artist. The different band logos used help me to decide what font to use for my band logos and the text being used in my magazine as it is indie related. The images of artists help me to decide what sire of shot should be used when I take pictures of my artist (which will be a Mid-shot).
Color Palette
The colour palette I will be using for my magazine is mainly a baby blue, a baby yellow, black, white, grey and also red. I have chosen to use pale light colours as I was inspired by my mood board since they use a lot of muted colours and still have a calm but edgy feel to it, which i am trying to achieve in my magazine and i believe these muted colours have calm connotations to it an fit the Indie genre. The red will be used as little accents, for example as a border around our featured musician as i still want my magazine to have an edgy feel to it, which i believe can be achieved through harsher colours. Whilst the which and black will be used in the background to draw more attention to the main picture to the artists and body copy, instead on the background.Competition
